Labels

lost souls cling
to peeling labels
seeking definition
through permission
digging through pages
for precedent to presence
pigeonhole personas
signifier Ven diagram
squeezing self description
to fit prescriptive vision
naming clouds and mountains
slapping flags on “firsts”
all yearning for worth
seizing superlative sequences
to see meaning in
probabilistic fluctuation
passing and indeterminate
—why clamor and grasp to
trademark a breath?
I must relent my envy
for the fabulous sparkling
delusion of fountains
spewing ordered fans
so busily missing stillness
where in mute understanding
beyond labels is glimpsed
perpetually inchoate world
that we so inaptly describe
obscuring all with language
and knowledge casting eyes
plaster preconceptions
screaming simulacra
speaks over the low whisper
of a moment, being
