Desire

my heart is impetuous
as a recklessly held bowl of water
my lips dream
like a shipwrecked sailor
of other shores
storm-lashed I heave
perilous sea of dreams
in this thread-bare vessel
scant enough for me
a poor-man’s Vronsky
splashing eager footsteps
a whole quixotic waltz
with ablutions for my feet
blessings for Walter Mitty
all his shuffling love scenes
what, I ask, in crude reality
is the point of immortal desire
outsized in grandiosity
to what any human can deliver
